Section 1: The Alchemy of Design
1. What is the difference between "Faux Finishing" and "Decorative Painting"? While the terms are often used interchangeably, "Faux" (French for "false") traditionally refers to the art of replicating natural materials like marble, wood grain, or stone. "Decorative Finishing" is a broader term encompassing everything from Italian Venetian plasters and metallic glazes to contemporary textures and stenciling. At Painted Finishes Studio, we utilize both traditional and modern techniques to create a cohesive, artistic environment.
2. Can you apply decorative finishes to surfaces other than walls? Absolutely. Thanks to advancements in material technology, we can refinish almost any substrate, including ceilings, cabinetry, and furniture. The secret lies in the alchemy of preparation—using the specialized primers and products required for each specific surface to ensure the finish is as durable as it is beautiful.
3. Do you work with Interior Designers and Architects? Yes, frequently. I enjoy collaborating with fellow design professionals to ensure the wall and furniture finishes integrate seamlessly with the overall architectural vision, textiles, and lighting of the space.
4. Can you match a specific fabric, wallpaper, or inspiration photo? In most cases, yes. While a 100% molecular match is rare in hand-applied art, I can generally come remarkably close to your inspiration. The beauty of a hand-rendered finish is that it captures the spirit and palette of your inspiration while remaining a unique, bespoke creation.
5. Are the materials you use eco-friendly or low-VOC? The health of your home and my fellow pet lovers is a priority. Most of the plasters and glazes I select are low-to-no VOC. However, certain high-performance or specialty finishes may require products for which there is currently no eco-friendly equivalent; I always discuss these options with you during the design phase.
Section 2: Investing in Your Space
6. How is the cost of a project determined? Pricing is determined on a per-project basis. Because every surface is different—ranging from a delicate furniture refinishing to applying crushed crystals to a cathedral ceiling—the labor, materials, and specialized processes vary significantly.
7. Is an initial deposit required to begin? Yes. A 50% deposit is required to secure your project on my production schedule. This investment allows us to order your specialized materials and begin the creation of your custom sample boards.
8. What is the cost for custom sample boards? For clients who have not yet signed a contract, custom sample boards are $250. This fee covers the materials and time required to create a physical representation of your vision. If a contract is signed and a deposit is made, sample creation is included as part of your project.
9. Do you provide a formal estimate and a final contract? Yes. Following our initial consultation, I provide a detailed estimate. Once the scope is finalized and you are ready to proceed, a formal contract is issued to protect both the client and the studio.
10. Do you provide furniture pick-up and delivery services? I am happy to provide pick-up and delivery for smaller, manageable pieces. For larger furniture items or full-room sets, I require clients to utilize a professional moving service. I am happy to refer you to trusted local movers who specialize in the careful transport of fine furniture.
11. Do you travel for projects outside of the Tampa Bay area? Yes. I have traveled extensively for specialized commissions. After finalizing the decorative details, I work closely with my clients to manage the logistics and site preparation required for out-of-area projects.
Section 3: What to Expect
12. Who actually performs the work on-site? I am the primary artist on every project. Depending on the scale of the commission, I may be joined by my assistant or my business partner to ensure the timeline is met without compromising the artistry.
13. What are your standard working days and hours? Generally, I am on-site from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. However, I am committed to returning your home to you as quickly as possible; for unoccupied residences, I often work late or through weekends. For commercial spaces, I work around your hours of operation, including overnight sessions, if necessary, to minimize disruption to your business.
14. How do I prepare my home or space for your arrival? To ensure a "Clean Start," I will send a Site Preparation Sheet a few days before we begin. This guide covers the removal of artwork, breakables, and rugs, as well as any necessary furniture staging.
15. What is the "curing time" for a typical finish? Because I utilize hundreds of different products, cure times vary. I list the specific dry and cure times for your chosen finish within your contract so you know exactly when it is safe to resume full use of the space.
16. Are your finishes durable and easy to maintain? Durability depends on the specific finish—a delicate metallic leaf requires different care than a rugged, polished plaster. I always discuss the "life" of a finish with you during our consultation to ensure it matches the needs of your household or commercial environment.
Section 4: Trust & Mission
17. Are you insured and do you provide professional references? Yes. I have been insured through Citadel Insurance for decades and can provide proof of coverage upon request. I am also happy to provide a list of professional references from my 30 years in the industry.
18. Do you belong to any professional artisan organizations? I have been a dedicated member of the International Decorative Artisans League (formerly SALI) since 1995, staying at the forefront of industry standards and new material technologies.
19. What is the "Clean Start" initiative? "Clean Start" is the heartbeat of Painted Finishes Studio. As a lifelong advocate for animal rescue, I believe every transformation should do some good. A portion of the proceeds from every project—and often the donation of client items—directly supports local animal rescues. It’s my way of ensuring that while we make your home beautiful, we are also helping a rescue dog find a "clean start" of their own.
